Background
The Lennox is a waterfront mixed-use development within the Parramatta City foreshore revitalisation precinct, set on the banks of the Parramatta River. Rich in history and cultural significance, the site’s prominent riverfront position called for a large-scale artwork with presence, depth and deep respect for Country.
The artist brief, developed by Site Image, invited contemplation of the riverfront and its relationship to the traditions and culture of the Dharug People of the area. Tilt provided initial consultation to the public art curator and developer to establish a suitable process for integrating the artwork on the columns while addressing design. manufacturing and commercial objectives. Tilt led the design development, prototyping, structural engineering, manufacturing and installation, working closely with the artist, architect and broader project team to bring the work to life.
The artwork references the shifting patterns of sand deposited by the Parramatta River’s constant movement, which echoes the layered history of the site, its people and the landscape over time.

Our Process
Tilt’s design and construction process ensured the outcome aligned closely with the artists’ impressions and the architectural intent of the project, while balancing the complex engineering considerations for the site.
Tilt’s design and construction process stayed true to the artistic intent and architectural vision, while carefully resolving the site’s complex engineering demands. From initial concept development through to fabrication and installation, each stage balanced aesthetic ambition with technical precision, structural integrity, material performance, and long-term durability. The result is an authentic, high-impact artwork that resonates with the site’s context and honours its rich history.

- Artwork Development
Tilt developed digital files for manufacturing from detailed Solidworks CAD models. The process of utilising digital files for manufacturing minimised fabrication timeframes and reduced the risk associated with fabricators interpreting 2D documentation.
The development of digital visual simulations and the provision of physical sampling during the design phase provided the project team confidence that the outcome would match the artistic vision.
Each panel was created using aluminium – addressing long-term corrosion concerns. Each panel laser-cut and powder-coated in a colour responding to the artistic and architectural palette.
- Installation
Given the complexity of the installation, establishing a reliable and cost-effective methodology was a priority from the outset.
A collaborative, integrated approach led to the creation of prefabricated panel assemblies, streamlining the installation and enabling a rapid, efficient on-site install. The compressed installation timeframe also supported the developer’s delivery objectives, ensuring a fast and smooth project turnaround without compromising quality or precision.

Tidal sands is a thought-provoking public expression for The Lennox.
The series of artistic panels integrated seamlessly across 16 prominent architectural columns visually communicating as a single image when viewed from a particular perspective on site.
The artwork panels cast slight offset to create a rippling sand effect through shadows.
