Background
Hutchinson Builders engaged Tilt to design and construct Arcadia’s landscape architecture concept for a leaf-curling spider themed playspace as part of the site’s rejuvenation plan.
The landscape architects’ site-specific research inspired their concept design. The concept was driven by ecological characteristics of the local area. In particular, the playground is based on the leaf curling spider, an inhabitant of most North Shore gardens.
Tilt supported Arcadia from inception through to installation to ensure their design intent was preserved throughout all project phases.
The overall form of the play and fitness elements was driven by the landscape design team, as were choices in object function, materiality, and even colour.

Design Thinking
Arcadia explored and developed sketches based on their research with confidence from Tilt that their ideas could be expanded into product elements.
The concepts were interpreted for functionality, buildability, and budget appropriateness and then translated into 3D models used to further analyse the design criteria in more detail. Each element was detailed to ensure functionality and compliance while incorporating the themed designs developed in ongoing coordination with the landscape team and the builder.
Tilt managed the detailed design, engineering and compliance certification, manufacturing, and installation of each item.

- Themed play space
Research into local flora and fauna provided site-specific inspiration for the project. The leaf-curling spider provided a dramatic theme for the main play structure and served as secondary inspiration for the supporting public domain elements.
- Artistic shade structure
Building on the leaf theme from the overall play structure, the shade element complements the surrounding features and protects those entertaining themselves on the bespoke ping-pong table from the sun. Both elements were designed to provide both a functional and thematic addition.
- Fitness equipment
Developed as an alternative to catalogue type exercise equipment, the bespoke and functional structures provide a more serious opportunity for people of all ages to engage with the space
- Table tennis
The equipment has been developed as an alternative to catalogue type exercise equipment. The bespoke and functional structures provide a more profound opportunity for people of all ages to engage with the space.

Solution
Tilt provided the opportunity for the landscape architects to curate each key component of the space and deliver a site-specific outcome for play, shade, exercise, and fun within the budget set aside for proprietary items.
Providing the opportunity for landscape architects to design and develop unique products and experiences for the public is a core skill of our industrial design team.
